Principle of The Winning Edge |
|
Two hikers are out hiking when all of a sudden a bear starts chasing them. They climb a tree, but the bear starts climbing up the tree after them. The first hiker gets his sneakers out of his knapsack and starts putting them on. The second hiker says, "What are you doing?" The first responds, "I figure when the bear gets close to us, we'll have to jump down and make a run for it." The second says, "Are you crazy? Don’t you know you can't outrun a bear? The first guy says, "I don't have to outrun the bear... I only have to outrun you!" In the game of Business — and life —he winner gets the big prize; second place receives just a fraction of the purse. Example: In the unforgetable 2008 U.S. Open Golf tournament, after 72 holes, Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate were tied at 283 strokes— on to an 18 hole playoff the next Monday. After 90 holes, they were still tied — 71 strokes each for the 18 hole playoff! Finally on the 91st hole, Tiger Woods scored a 4, Rocco Mediate scored a bogey 5. Tiger won $1,260,000; Rocco got $755,000. Is that right! Maybe not, but that's the way they do it! In the 2008 Olympics, Michael Phelps won a memorable race by 1/100 of a second — less than the blink of an eye. He got the gold medal; second place took silver. Swimmer Dara Torres is another illustration: She won a total of three silver medals at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 — including the famous 50-meter race where she took second by 1/100 of a second. There are many other examples of close finishes decided by less than a blink of an eye. So where did Michael Phelps pick up that winning edge? Which stroke in the race? The first jump? The push off the wall? The last stroke? Or was it in the countless hours of training and workouts? His diet and exercise regimin? In business, there might be no silver medal. You simply must come in first or lose it all. Key point: You only have to win by a nose to win it all. And you can lose by a nose, too! So how hard are you willing to work to ensure that you win consistently? What effort will you put in behind the scenes so that when it counts, you know you are truly ready? |
